Reach Out, Give Hope

Tzu Chi Foundation has mobilized hundreds of volunteers in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which completely devastated the coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

With so many left homeless, Tzu Chi has already begun to help evacuees in Texas, Arizona, Kansas, New York and California. Tzu Chi volunteers are giving the evacuees shelter, food and other basic necessities. Tzu Chi's founder Dharma Master Cheng Yen, who resides in Taiwan, urges Tzu Chi volunteers in all 28 states to help families recover from this disaster as quick as possible.

Tzu Chi provides immediate and direct financial assistance in the form of checks or gift cards to evacuees in Houston, Beaumont, Dallas, Kansas City and Phoenix. The emergency check or gift cards will allow families to buy daily necessities, food, water, clothing, and prescription medicine.

Tzu Chi has committed US$4 million for emergency relief efforts. Tzu Chi members across the world have responded the call of Dharma Master Cheng Yen, founder of Tzu Chi, to raise funds to support on-going and subsequent relief plans.

Tzu Chi members in over 20 countries have organized activities to appeal for donations, including: the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Dutch Maarten, Paraguay, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Thailand, Jordan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Austria, England, South Africa, and Taiwan.

A mobile dental vehicle, equipped with two dental stations and owned by the Los Angeles-based Buddhist Tzu Chi Free Clinic, is now providing free dental treatment for the evacuees in Houston area.

"We want to help as many people as we can. Tzu Chi means "serving with compassion." It is important to let the people who have evacuated know that there are people who are compassionate and are doing things to help. It will be a long road to recovery, so we are asking the public to help by giving what they can," says CEO Austin Tsao.
