Tzu Chi College of Nursing

Some of the nursing students have some basic understanding about Tzu Chi, but many do not. A two-day orientation at the Abode of Still Thoughts allows students to learn about Buddhist etiquette, environmental care, and the Tzu Chi missions.

The movements and gestures of the nuns are sermons on the dignity, tranquility and simplicity of Buddhist life. The photos show students and nuns at the Abode preparing vegetables, making candles, and experiencing the simple life of the Abode. For these students, the Abode is a home that is always warm and open. Many of them come back again before graduation to thank their teachers for their tireless instruction and to take a final good look at the Tzu Chi spirit.

Spreading the Tzu Chi Spirit

The nursing college celebrated its fourth anniversary in 1993. The college was praised by the Ministry of Education as the best for the quality of its teachers, its complete equipment and the overall achievement of the students. Master Cheng Yen still insists on the lowest possible fees for regular students, and fourth- and fifth-year students who are exempted from tuition can receive a monthly allowance of US$110. No other private school can do as much. More than 1,000 graduates are now serving all over the island. They apply their skills with the kindness and compassion that they learned. Their colleagues praise them for their courtesy and loving hearts. Graduates cheerfully do work that no one else wants to do. They remember the Master's admonition, "Work willingly and accept the results cheerfully," so no hardship is too great. The spread of the Tzu Chi spirit and the creation of a good reputation are the best evaluation for the colleges and the best affirmation and feedback for the students.

Human Truth, Goodness and Beauty
Since its establishment, the nursing college has emphasized both professional and humanitarian education. Master Cheng Yen desired to add traditional Chinese humanitarianism to the education, including classes in tea ceremony, flower arrangement and Zen meditation, which combine the art and philosophy of life. These courses echo the Tzu Chi spirit of accommodation and gratitude, and they give teachers and students space for spiritual formation. Students say, "The humanities teach us to be careful, attentive, patient, and grateful in all things."
