Master Tai Hsu said, "Veneration of the Buddha is completed in human character; when the Buddha finds perfection in humanity, that is true reality." This is representative of Master Tai Hsu's thought on "humanitarian Buddhism."
In the Buddhist Ekottara-agama scripture, it is written: "All buddhas come from the human world; no one can become a buddha in heaven." This is the source of Venerable Master Yin Shun's thought on "human Buddhism."
As a disciple of Master Yin Shun, Master Cheng Yen received his thought on "human Bud-dhism." Therefore, she promotes the concept that "If human character is complete, the Buddha's character is complete." The Master often reminds her disciples that in the cycle of reincarnation, we rarely get the chance to be born in the human world. Therefore, we must do the best we can as human beings and always advance on the Path of the Bodhisattvas. If we persevere in our spiritual cultivation, we will naturally move toward the path of the Buddha and attain enlightenment.
