Tzu Chi Writers' Group

(Translated by Mike Lee, Northern CA)

In order to transmit Tzu Chi's cultural work far and wide, the Tzu Chi Writers' Group was formally created on October 15, 1989, in Taipei. The group has the important responsibility of putting on paper the history of Tzu Chi.

The aspirations for forming the Writer's Group are:

  1. to chronicle in detail the progress of the missions of the Tzu Chi Foundation, in order to act as a witness to the history of the foundation;
  2. to disseminate the Tzu Chi spirit through literary publications in the hope of promoting radiant, orthodox Buddhism; and
  3. to let our cultural work purify society.

Master Cheng Yen hopes that that all members of the Writers' Group will "use the pen to cultivate the Tzu Chi field of blessings," and "use the brave, untiring spirits of pioneers to write moving stories of Tzu Chi people."

The responsibilities of the Writers' Group include:

  1. the cataloging of cassette recordings, including Master Cheng Yen's sermons, lectures given by commissioners during various social functions, and interviews with public figures on the Tzu Chi World radio program;
  2. the preservation of the precious history of Tzu Chi by writing about members' experiences in volunteering and visiting the poor, their thoughts after participating in various activities, interviews with public figures, stories of how people broke bad habits or changed themselves through Tzu Chi, the little stories that happen in the world of Tzu Chi, or how members first came to join Tzu Chi.
