Tzu Chi Volunteers

(Translated by Douglas Shaw)

In addition to the members of its other groups, Tzu Chi has a large number of volunteer workers, also known as "mobile service desks." Most people have heard of the volunteers at the Tzu Chi Hospital. Actually, there are all kinds of volunteers-such as those who help in environmental protection and resource recycling-at foundation headquarters in Hualien and at all the branch offices.

The logo of the Tzu Chi volunteers is a pair of clasping hands surrounded by a heart. This repre-sents the commitment that Tzu Chi people make: "The palms of our hands face downwards in order to give cheerfully, not upwards to take." This shows that every Tzu Chi member always works "hand in hand" with Master Cheng Yen and the other Tzu Chi people. Tzu Chi people all know that it is better to give than receive.
