Love for a relative, lover or friend leads to emotional troubles and often causes suffering and torment. Master Cheng Yen's lecture, "Speak of Enduring Affection, Express Great Love," offers people an alternative attitude towards dealing with emotion. The Master says, "If you want to speak of affection, then speak of enduring affection—the affection of enlightenment; if you wish to practice love, then you must practice great love—the love of liberation [from the cycle of reincarnation]."
The Buddha encourages us to have Great Love—to love deeply, to love universally, to achieve detachment from self and harmony with the natural universe. We should not become mired in the trap of personal, selfish "small love."
